La urbe no está bien planeada, abundan los conflictos interraciales, barrios abandonados, una industria deficiente…
Sin embargo tiene algo que otras no tienen, un “corazón”, según lo menciona Richie Hawtin; el espíritu del lugar se manifestaba en la música que se estaba generando allí a finales de la década de los ochenta. Los ritmos de Motown no podías encontrarlos en ningún otro lado, era la música del futuro.
